Hello, I am Henry C. Granison and I hope to be your selection as the Tompkins County Legislator for the 3rd District of the City of Ithaca, which encompasses the neighborhoods of selected parts of Cornell's campus and C-town, Belle Sherman and South Hill.
I have lived in Ithaca for 18 years with most of that time as a member of the Bryant Park section of the Belle Sherman neighborhood. I worked for a number of years at Cornell Law School and I currently work as an Adjunct Faculty member at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
My family consists of my law school sweetheart Mary Beth Grant and our two daughters. Both of our daughters started their education at the Belle Sherman Elementary School, then continued on to Boynton Middle School and finally graduated from Ithaca High School.
My education includes graduating from Harvard College and Cornell Law School. I worked as a lawyer for a number of years at two large law firms and for the State of Minnesota in their lawyer disciplinary office.
Although my first job out of college was working for my congressman, the Honorable Peter J. Rodino (D. NJ), I have not pursued any political office until this year. I am running because of the election of Donald Trump as president. The election was a wake up call to me the I must get active in the political realm.
My background is being the son of working class parents who belonged to the Baker's and Electrical Workers's Unions. Neither of my parents attended college but my father did pursue a college degree much later in life. Both of my parents worked full time jobs during my entire childhood. In fact, I would assume that I am the only candidate for legislature whose family has been on food stamps.
Accordingly, the issues that I care about the most helping low and middle income families against the anticipated problems that they will face under the Trump Administration. I strongly believe in the traditional ideals of the Democratic Party of assisting people who live in poverty and those people in the working and middle classes.
I believe that we need to protect the array of social services that are available to people, We also must find creative solutions to creating affordable housing in Tompkins County.
There are many other issues that I feel passionate about like sustainability and the protection of the environment, but I will be updating this site as time goes on to discuss these issues.
I also want to acknowledge that I will seek the opinions of the members of the 3rd District as I campaign for this position. A political candidate does not have all the answers and I plan on relying on the vast experience and knowledge of the future constituents.
